2013 Jun 25

Michael Calavan of Sisters was among a group of more than 700 students who received a diploma at George Fox University's spring commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 4. Calavan earned a bachelor of arts in art degree from the Newberg, Ore. based university.

About 375 students participated in the traditional undergraduate ceremony after completing study in one of George Fox's 41 bachelor's degree majors. Another 370 students took part in the ceremony for graduate, seminary and degree-completion students. Of those who participated in the latter ceremony, 44 were adult degree program students who earned bachelor's degrees.

Ceremonies took place in Miller Gymnasium in the Wheeler Sports Center on the school's Newberg, Ore., campus. The commencement speaker was John Davis, a 2005 alumnus of George Fox who works as a real estate attorney and who, in November of 2012, was elected to the Oregon State House of Representatives as a representative of District 26.

George Fox University is ranked by Forbes among the top Christian universities in the country and is a Christian college classified by U.S. News & World Report as a first-tier regional university.
